With this track record behind him and the promise of a long-term project, Sainz de Aja decided to accept this summer the offer of Adecco Estudiantes to take charge of the first team of a club that has always been characterized by patience and work with the youth. The roster was revamped within the economic possibilities of the club, relying on young players such as Vidaurreta, Gabriel and Jasen, but without dismantling the backbone formed by Alfonso Reyes, Jiménez, Azofra, Gonzalo Martínez and Marlon Garnett. The renewal of Felipe Reyes was announced with great fanfare, almost as a turning point in the club’s history and a guarantee of better times for a fan base accustomed to seeing its stars emigrate in search of money and titles.

No one doubts that sport, in childhood and youth, contributes very favorably to the educational development of the person. From your experience, what aspects of personal development do sports activities contribute most to, and which ones do you think should be given more attention in the education of students in our schools?
At present, as Sports Coordinator of the Virgen de Atocha School, and with the enormous experience you have, what elements would you consider indispensable in the sports education of the students and how do you think they could be favored?

We always played as a minimum with ten players. We played as a team. They were all important in their clubs, but in the national team many of them were second-string players, they were not so important. The good thing about these players is that they knew how to accept their role of playing less minutes. This was one of the keys to success. They knew that those minutes were also important and many times we took advantage of their quality to win games because they were usually better than the reserves of the opposing teams.
There are two ways to get there. The first is to achieve an important success, as they did, and then the clubs are half obliged to bet on them. And then there are other players, such as Alberto Herreros or many others, who know how to make a living by progressing little by little. Some grow from LEB Silver or LEB Gold to become important players and succeed in ACB teams. The important thing is that the player keeps wanting to play, keeps wanting to improve? The problem for many is that maybe they have tried too soon, they have seen that things didn’t work out and they have quit.

«I have disassociated myself as head coach. If they want to count on me in the future, it’s a matter of talking and, if the position is positive for the club and for me, I wouldn’t mind continuing because Estudiantes was comfortable with me and I was comfortable with Estudiantes,» Sainz de Aja, who had a contract until the end of the season and an option for one more if he met a series of objectives, told EFE.
«If I can be blamed for anything, the way things have been presented to me, it is that I have been a good person, in quotation marks. I’m not a whip staff. I like players to play basketball because they are professionals and are paid, not because they are required to play. If that has been my mistake, I assume it, but that’s the way I am,» the coach explained.
Sainz de Aja stressed «a professional is worth or not worth and it is not a question of getting angry. Nor to be friends with the players, although there has been no friendship. If they think that we have not demanded what we had to demand from the players, that’s it».
Sainz de Aja also does not understand why Adecco Estudiantes told him that «he would have time to work, that there was no rush and then it turns out that he is the first team in the league to change the coach this season».
