Lucas bravo de laguna meets with the sportsman
Lucas Bravo de Laguna, son of the founder of Unidos por Gran Canaria, José Miguel Bravo de Laguna, is the new president of the party, elected in the second congress held by the formation. He denies being his father’s dolphin, he promises to become a force for the Island starting from the creation of local committees in the different municipalities of Gran Canaria, and to fight for the Island without pleitism.
We are in advanced talks to create local committees in Ingenio, Santa Lucia, Telde, of course, in Gáldar, Artenara and San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which is where we are right now with the constitution of a committee soon. In this sense, I am going to hold an insular council on July 28th in which, among other things, the constitution of these local committees will take place. All my first stage as a politician took place in a city council, that of Santa Brigida, and I am very clear that without strength in the municipalities you do not have it in other institutions. We have to strengthen the brand Unidos por Gran Canaria there. Without that local support we will not have influence neither in the Cabildo nor in the Parliament.

Bravo de Laguna considers that the island needs a party “without ties with other formations” and, as an example, he exposes that in the reception of foreign migrant minors arriving to the Archipelago, Gran Canaria is in charge of more than 60% of the 2,700 who are under the guardianship of the autonomy. “The PP and the PSOE do not talk about referrals because their autonomic presidents get upset. Why are 1,700 only in Gran Canaria? Where is the solidarity of the rest of the Archipelago?”, he wonders.
About a possible national alliance similar to the one Nueva Canarias had with the PSOE, the leader of UxGC recognizes that he cannot say “of this water I will not drink”, but today he remarks that “a priori we believe that we will have enough strength” to run alone in the 2023 elections.
And, in the regional nationalist sphere, he considers that Nueva Canarias “is more and more a crutch of the PSOE” and CC “has had much more strength in Tenerife and pulls more for that island”. Therefore, claims that UxGC a better defense of the round island and its interests.

“Originally, yes. It is true that José Miguel Bravo de Laguna created Unidos por Gran Canaria as a result of his departure from the PP when he was president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. But right now we have many people who have never been in the PP, who come from different professional activities, without political trajectory. Or who were in other parties”.
“CC, in Gran Canaria, has never had excessive strength. And in 2019 it considered that going with us could bring them a plus. I think it was so, because, for the first time, the electoral list that was presented got two deputies in Gran Canaria, when CC always got one. For us it was a complicated decision that cost us quite a few votes, a part of our voters did not understand it”.
“Our idea is to run without pre-electoral pacts. This is what we decided at the Congress held a few weeks ago with more than 300 people. Like any political party, what we want is to grow. That is why we are working to establish ourselves in all the municipalities of Gran Canaria. And the response, so far, has been very positive. Although in politics you can never say of this water I will not drink. And I do not want to pass for a liar, because then the newspaper archives disprove you. If not, look at Casimiro Curbelo and some of the people with whom he is trying to form his project. If you look at the newspaper archives, you will be astonished”.
Lucas bravo de laguna continues as president of the pp of gran canaria.
This Saturday, Unidos por Gran Canaria has elected Lucas Bravo de Laguna as president of the party and Enrique Hernández Bento as vice-president. It has done so in a congress held at the Gran Canaria Arena in which José Miguel Bravo de Laguna, until now at the head of the party, has handed over the baton to his son.
In this congress there have been striking incorporations, such as that of the former national deputy of the Popular Carmen Guerra and now councilor in the group of the non-attached in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after leaving the PP. Martín Sosa Domínguez, first deputy mayor of the Villa de Santa Brígida, has also been appointed to another of the vice-presidencies.
“I cannot begin my speech in this Congress without thanking the invitation of both José Miguel and Lucas Bravo de Laguna, who have encouraged me to join this political project that so excites the people of Gran Canaria”, assured Carmen Guerra.
In the new organic structure of the party, the former president and founder of the organization, and currently Insular councilor and spokesman of UxGC in the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, José Miguel Bravo de Laguna, will continue to exercise “tasks of great interest and relevance in the Board of Directors, as in other areas of the party, where he will continue to work closely,” said the formation in a statement.
