La liga la disputan 18 clubes. Cada temporada, el equipo que termina en primer lugar en la LEB Oro asciende automáticamente a la Liga ACB. Los equipos que terminan la temporada entre el 2º y el 9º puesto entran en un torneo de playoffs, cuyo ganador también consigue el ascenso a la Liga ACB. Los tres equipos que terminan en último lugar en la LEB Oro descienden a la LEB Plata.
Un total de 75 equipos han competido en la LEB Oro desde su creación en 1996. 18 equipos se han proclamado campeones y 28 equipos han conseguido el ascenso a la Liga ACB, de los cuales sólo cinco equipos no han podido jugar en la Liga ACB. El Club Melilla Baloncesto es el único equipo que ha jugado todas las temporadas de la liga.
A la mitad de la liga, los dos primeros equipos de la tabla juegan la Copa Princesa en casa del ganador de la primera mitad de la temporada. El campeón de esta Copa jugará los play-offs como primer clasificado si termina la liga entre el 2º y el 5º clasificado.
Los dos primeros equipos ascienden a la ACB. Desde 2007-08, se conoce como LEB Oro y el campeón de la temporada regular asciende a ACB sin jugar los playoffs. El ganador de la final de los playoffs es el otro equipo que asciende.
