Santiago was formed in the youth academy of La Equidad where he proved to be an unbalanced player with great skills. He debuted as a professional in the 2009 Finalization Tournament against Deportes Tolima, having a successful season in La Equidad and playing 28 games, besides having a great performance in the 2011 U-20 World Cup held in Colombia.
He was signed in June 2011 by Sporting Lisbon of Portugal.[1]Despite his great ability as a winger, he failed to consolidate as a starter at the club, he played only 7 games with the main squad, most of the time he played in Sporting Lisbon B, where he was a starter in 28 games and scored 1 goal.
For the 2015-16 season, Arias plays for the first time in his career the Champions League also qualifying as seeded in the hype 1 along with the other 7 champions of the 8 best European leagues.
On January 27, 2018 he scores his first goal of the season, scoring his first goal of the season in the 90th minute in the final victory 2-0 over FC Twente, on February 17 he scores his second goal of the season in a two-goal draw against Sportclub Heerenveen, on February 25 he returns and scores in the 3-1 win at home to Feyenoord Rotterdam.

Santiago Arias Naranjo (nacido el 13 de enero de 1992) es un futbolista profesional colombiano que juega como lateral derecho en el Bayer Leverkusen alemán, cedido por el Atlético Madrid español y la selección de Colombia.
Arias fue un producto de la cantera de La Equidad. Pasó a la selección absoluta en 2009, debutando como profesional ese mismo año ante el Deportes Tolima. Pronto se convirtió en un habitual del club bogotano y acumuló 28 partidos. Sus notables actuaciones le valieron la oportunidad de representar a su país en la Copa Mundial Sub-20 de la FIFA 2011 celebrada en Colombia[4] Tras un exitoso paso por su club y a nivel internacional, pronto se trasladó a Portugal para unirse a las filas del equipo lisboeta Sporting CP[5].
Mientras representaba a la selección colombiana sub-20 en 2011, Arias atrajo a los ojeadores del Sporting CP. El 1 de julio de 2011, Arias fue finalmente fichado por el Sporting con un contrato de 5 años por un traspaso libre de 300.000 euros.[6] Debutó en Europa el 6 de noviembre sustituyendo a Matías Fernández en el minuto 80 contra la U.D. Leiria.[7] A pesar de debutar con el primer equipo, Arias pasó la mayor parte de su tiempo de juego con el equipo B, donde marcó un gol en 28 partidos.
