Espinoso de compludo madrid
N06 beneiro route (noceda)
With an altitude of 1,104 meters above sea level, the observation area is located on the edge of the village, in the place of La Era, a natural esplanade formerly dedicated to agricultural work and where there is also a viewpoint.
The village has an Inn, a Tavern and several Rural Houses, and is an example of respect for the traditional architecture of the area, with its houses basically made of stone, wood and slate.
From Ponferrada, take the road LE-CV-192/21 that goes up to the ski resort of El Morredero. 2 km after passing the town of Salas de los Barrios, take the detour to Espinoso de Compludo.

The 7th century was the time when the Compludo monastery was founded; it is believed that blacksmithing flourished then, due to the needs of the cattle breeders in the area, who needed tools that only a blacksmith could make.
During the visit Manuel explains the working procedure; how the water drives the air and fuels the flame; how the blades that we have seen rotate and drive the beam, acting as a lever for the anvil, with which the work that requires the most strength is done.

Restaurant el caibel (ponferrada) – campaign
Etymologies aside, it is mandatory to say in the introduction the privilege of having this valley so close, and not to forget that all of us from Bierzo have the moral duty to protect and preserve it for those who come after us.
Today we have planned a circular walk of about 15 kilometers that, starting from Espinoso de Compludo, will take us to the mills of Vegamolín, to the famous Herrería, and to Compludo, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we will return to Espinoso by an uphill stretch of about 4 kilometers.
I remember that during my childhood, back in the nineties, a school friend of mine was from Espinoso. The images that I have in my memory of that town do not correspond at all with the perfectly arranged and recovered houses of the present time. In those days, it threatened ruin and abandonment; today, it is one of the most beautiful villages in El Bierzo. We will talk about Espinoso later, when we return in the afternoon to watch the sunset in this spectacular viewpoint over the region. Now it’s time to get on the road as soon as possible…

After the intense descent we arrived at the Vegamolín Mill, already at the level of the Meruelo river. It is a mill recently restored by the neighbors of Espinoso and, although I do not know if it works, you can see perfectly its components: as the wheel that should move the millstone or the channels that should carry the water to the wheel…
The signs of the route at all times speak of «mills of Vegamolin», in plural, the road ends in this one, which a plaque names as: «Molino de abajo». I do not know if there are any more, we moved around the area looking for something that could indicate the way to other mills, but we did not find anything.
After contemplating the mill, we returned to Espinoso by the same way we had come, but unlike before, facing an intense climb. Once in the village, we approached the viewpoint of San Mamed, where we ate taking advantage of the tranquility of the place, under a winter sun that, despite the cold, made us be in glory.
