Little by little the track gets smoother until we leave it to undertake the final ascent. Here there is no path, only a series of milestones between the brooms that lead us to the top of Casillas (1,768 m) following our intuition.
The views are our reward: Sierra de Guadarrama, Tiétar valley, Sierra de Gredos … There is not a hint of breeze but the amount of insects swirling around our heads makes us not take too long up there.
Mountain bike puerto de casillas – castañar del tiemblo
Casillas is surrounded by forests and being very close to the Natural Reserve of the Iruelas Valley, you can also enjoy a wide range of wildlife: wild boars, deer, roe deer … And in the sky, the black vulture stands out.
It is a corner that is full of paths for the enjoyment of hikers. One of the most emblematic routes is the ascent to Puerto de Casillas (1465 meters), the gateway to the reserve. The easiest route is the one that follows the forest trail. It starts in the town itself and follows the direction of Eras del Prado. It is also possible to go along the old road or through the pasture.
The Ethnographic Museum La Resina is also worth a visit because it shows visitors in detail the rural environment in which it is located and the history of different generations of Casillanos.
Autumn in the castañar de el tiemblo and casillas
CASILLASCasillas is a municipality located in the Valle del Tiétar, in the south of the province of Avila. The town borders with Sotillo de la Adrada, Santa Maria del Tiétar, El Barraco and Rozas de Puerto Real (Madrid). The village is located in the upper part of the valley, at an altitude of over a thousand meters, on the southern slopes of the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos, near the source of the river Tiétar and surrounded by forests of chestnut and oak trees that give the population a special microclimate with mild temperatures throughout the year. Rainfall is frequent, with abundant streams (Lanchuela, Venero, Penas) of clear water and good quality. The economy of the municipality is centered on livestock and agriculture. Its two star products are mushrooms, whose varieties are highly appreciated both by occasional collectors and by mycology lovers, and castan mushrooms, with an excellent quality. Both are part of the traditional cuisine of the whole area. Casillas is located 75 km from Avila and 98 km from Madrid.
