Gorges de carança

Tourisme canigou

From France, the access by the river has been forced by cornices carved into the rock, footbridges and suspension bridges. The visitor easily crosses this natural amusement park, where he tests his mastery of the fear of heights, while, under his feet, the river makes its way between the rock walls.
At the entrance to Thués entre Valls a sign leads to the parking area specially prepared for visitors to the Gorges de la Carança, giving us a clue as to how popular and popular this route is, a mixture of hiking and adventure. Adventure because the route, although it does not present many difficulties, it is not an ordinary path either, as it has sections carved into the wall and sections equipped with bridges and walkways over the Carança river that give it a very special character.
We recommend starting the route by Les Cornises; the path begins by crossing a wooden bridge in the parking lot and leaving the entrance to the Gorges on our left. We will quickly gain altitude with Thués and the Tet River in sight until we enter directly by the path gained to the wall, perhaps the most spectacular. A safety cable runs along this section at high altitude, in which if we want we can secure ourselves.

Gorge de la carança parcours

From France, the access by the river has been forced by cornices carved in the rock, footbridges and suspension bridges. The visitor easily crosses this natural amusement park, where he tests his mastery of the fear of heights, while, under his feet, the river makes its way between the rock walls.
After leaving the car, you will find two signs on white panels hooked on a post, where it says on the first sign, indicating to the right: “La Carança par Chambre d’eau et Corniche”, and on the second sign, indicating to the left: “La Carança per Roc de Madrid ou Corniche” (Photo 1).
After a few meters, you find another sign indicating “Les Passerreles” (Photo 3) in white and very large letters painted on a concrete wall, and the arrows indicate in both directions, both to the right and to the left.
As I said, we follow the path to the left, not the one that goes along the river, which goes up to about 1200m. altitude, and then, after about 45 minutes, we descend steadily to the river Carança.

Gorges de la carança accident

The Goges de Carança are spectacular gorges in the eastern French Pyrenees that can be visited thanks to a system of metal walkways, bridges and stairs that turn this simple excursion into an adventure set in a scenario worthy of a Tolkien story.
A highlight of this starting point is the Roc de la Foradada, a pass between two rocks that has a large block of stone as a roof. This is one of the most photographed points of the route (along with the bridges and walkways, of course). The Roc de la Foradada also has a very popular sport climbing area.
It is a narrow and vertiginous path carved into the rock, similar to the Cares Route, which follows the cliff formed by the river. It seems that it was built to have access to the hydroelectric plant that we have left a little above and that produces the energy that moves the yellow train. It is for this reason that during the tour we will find access gates to the company’s facilities almost hidden among the rocks.

Refuge du ras de la carança

An exciting and fun option to walk in the Pyrenean valley of Carança is the equipped path Les Gorges de la Carança. It is a circular trail that runs at high altitude through bridges, walkways and ledges carved into the rock.
The trail starts by crossing the wooden bridge at the parking lot, leaving the entrance to Les Gorges on the left. The route ascends, leaving Thués and the Tet River in sight, until entering the path carved into the wall.
In total, four bridges and four steps carved into the wall complete the route, which will take about four hours in total between the outward and return. In summer, the waters are tempting for a refreshing dip.
Hikers who have hiked the trail recommend it mostly because of its rugged beauty. They also recommend taking food and beverages to spend the day in comfort and enjoy the fresh air.
To get to know the region better, visitors can use the services of the Jaune train, or Yellow Train. Built at the beginning of the century to connect the Catalonian highlands, it runs 63 kilometers through spectacular landscapes.
