To access this ferrata first have to cross the town of Formiche Alto. At the exit of the village, we will see the first indo of the ferrata, but until we reach it there are still a few kilometers.
We will have to leave behind a well-known hostel and rural house to reach the first sign that tells us that we are approaching the ferrata. A sign that says TERCER ESTRECHO will indicate the right direction, from that moment, we leave the road to get into a track. After a few kilometers on the track we finally reach the information signs of the ferrata.
It’s 12 noon, we go in plan tranki cool, we go with food and we’ll see what we do, the case is to enjoy and take lots of pictures. That if, we leave the car with the irons hanging and in no time we will be in work.
And another bridge tells us that we reached the first strait. We have taken about two and a half hours between visiting caves, skating and many photos. It is almost 15.00 hours and we have to eat and at 18.00 it is night. Moral, as we do not know what we have left, we decide to eat quietly and return on the walked to ensure light for the entire return.
Via ferrata estrechos de la hoz (formiche alto)
The mayor of Formiche Alto, José Luis Escriche, explains that the idea of installing the route for the via ferrata arose because they wanted to offer a different attraction to visitors and because the area had the ideal conditions for the activity. Thus, they began to apply for subsidies that allowed them to execute it by sections. In total three, from easier to more difficult, and with an escape route between each of them for those who are in a hurry and want to continue along a path.
The route does not have too much difficulty, it is even suitable for children in its first two sections, but it gets more complicated along the route, which reaches a height of one hundred meters in some steep vertical walls. Along the way there are several caves, some of them used by the maquis, and you can get to know the sabina pinera. A peculiar phenomenon formed by a juniper whose trunk was born a pine tree of large dimensions.
From the camping Casa Fausto, the manager Eduardo Reguero argues that they are happy with this new attraction because it manages to lengthen the stays of their guests. “It’s not that more people come, but the more services you offer them, the more days they stay,” he says. In this sense, he recognizes that most visitors go in search of Dinópolis and the Dinosaur Route of El Castellar, a 2.3-kilometer walking tour with dinosaur fossils museographically enabled for their visit.
Ferrata narrows of the sickle (formiche alto)
Well, today we are going very close to Teruel, specifically to the village of Formiche Alto, where the river Mijares has reserved one of the most spectacular natural sites in the province and that well deserves a visit and an entry in this blog.
The via ferrata is between the villages of Formiche Alto and El Castellar, so we must take the A-23 highway and exit Formiche taking the TE-V-8011 that passes through Formiche, and after passing the village go pending the signpost of the route that on the left will put us on a dirt track, well conditioned in the first instance.
In this sequence of map I mark with green arrows the track that we must take (it is indicated in the same asphalt road), if we follow it a few meters (always following the indications of the via ferrata) we will arrive at some old farmhouses with a wide area (old threshing floors) next to the track, where we can leave the car (I have marked it with the P for Parking). If we go with SUVs we can continue down to the river Mijares from where the route will start.
Ferrata formiche chino chano
In the track is attached waypoint with the crossing that must be taken to access it. There are several areas where you can park. In this case we leave the vehicle a few meters from the beginning of the Via Ferrata although we must be cautious in this section depending on the state of the track.
It ends with the most vertical step of the whole ferrata, which takes us to a wooden bridge. From this point we can access the Ferrata Jurassic but in this case we return directly to the starting area.
