Andy is a secret agent for British Intelligence who has two of the biggest passions of his very dangerous job: an obsession with risk and a huge attraction to other people’s women. O Alfaiate do Panamá é um filme de thriller irlandês-americano de 2001 dirigido por John Boorman a partir de um guião que co-escreveu com John le Carré e Andrew Davies. Baseado no romance homónimo de le Carré, de 1996, estrelou Pierce Brosnan e Geoffrey Rush. Rush retrata o personagem do título, um antigo condenado que transformou um alfaiate, armado por um agente amoral MI6 (Brosnan), em espião do governo panamenho. Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine McCormack, Leonor Varela, e Harold Pinter co-estrela, juntamente com um jovem Daniel Radcliffe na sua estreia no cinema.
O filme fez a sua estreia no Festival Internacional de Cinema de Berlim a 11 de Fevereiro de 2001, antes de ser lançado teatralmente nos Estados Unidos pela Columbia Pictures a 30 de Março. Recebeu críticas positivas, com elogios às performances de Brosnan e Rush, e recebeu 28 milhões de dólares num orçamento de 21 milhões de dólares.
Andy Osnard é um espião do MI6 reafectado ao Panamá após ter tido um caso em Madrid com a amante do ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros. O seu superior avisa-o da corrupção presente no Panamá, mas Osnard encara isso como uma oportunidade. Consultando uma lista de cidadãos britânicos residentes no Panamá, conhece Harry Pendel, o alfaiate de muitas das elites do Panamá, incluindo o Presidente. Pendel, um talentoso contador de histórias, faz-se passar por ser anteriormente de Savile Row, mas é de facto um ex-condenado que costumava gerir esquemas com o seu falecido tio Benny. A esposa de Pendel, Louisa, a assistente do administrador da Autoridade do Canal do Panamá, desconhece o seu registo criminal. Embora Harry seja um soberbo alfaiate, é um mau empresário; a sua loja de alfaiate está constantemente em dívida, e deve 50.000 dólares do dinheiro de Louisa ao banco por um negócio agrícola que falhou.
